A total of 19 swimmers have officially been presented with the national flag on May 2, 2026, as they prepare to represent Tanzania at the 17th African Swimming Championships scheduled to take place in Algeria from May 5 to 13, 2026 a journey that carries not only competitive ambition, but the pride and identity of a nation.

The team is a dynamic blend of talent forged through discipline and resilience, comprising three key categories: the energetic “junior team,” the experienced and competitive “senior team,” and the seasoned “masters” whose years in the sport bring depth and tactical wisdom. Together, they form a unified force where generations converge with a single mission elevating Tanzania’s presence on the continental stage.

The flag handover ceremony, held at the Shaban Robert Swimming Pool in Dar es Salaam, was more than a formal send off; it was a symbolic moment where responsibility shifted from fabric to spirit. As the flag changed hands, it seemed to settle not just in their grip, but firmly within their hearts.

Speaking during the ceremony, the National Sports Council’s Senior Sports Officer, Charles Maguzu, urged the athletes to fully grasp the magnitude of their role. He emphasized that victory is not measured by medals alone, but by the dignity, discipline, and national pride they exhibit in every stroke.

“The Government stands firmly behind you, alongside TSA leadership, your parents, and all Tanzanians. As you compete, remember you carry the entire nation with you. Give your all and strive for excellence,” he stated, his words igniting a palpable sense of purpose.

He further called upon Tanzanians residing in Algeria to turn up in large numbers to support the team, noting that the energy of supporters can often become the invisible force that propels athletes beyond their limits.

On his part, the Chairman of the Tanzania Swimming Association (TSA), David Mwansyoge, outlined the team’s clear ambition: reaching the finals and competing at the highest level. He expressed deep appreciation to the Government and parents for their unwavering support, highlighting that such opportunities are built on collective commitment and sacrifice.

“Our athletes have been prepared with great care. We believe in their ability, and we are confident they can go far,” he affirmed, projecting calm assurance.

Behind the scenes, Team Manager Khadija Shebe offered a reassuring assessment, confirming that all swimmers are in excellent condition and have undergone thorough training. Her remarks painted a picture of readiness of a team stepping into competition with both physical preparedness and mental focus.

Her words felt like a steady compass before entering turbulent waters, signaling that every detail had been accounted for ahead of the challenge.

Representing the athletes, team captain Filbertha Demelo spoke with composed determination, pledging that the team is fully prepared to compete with intensity and purpose. She emphasized that their mission goes beyond participation it is about delivering results and making their country proud.

“We have trained well, we trust in our capabilities, and we are ready to fight for our nation,” she declared, echoing the collective spirit of the squad.

As the countdown to the championships begins, the eyes of Tanzania will turn toward the waters of Algeria following every stroke, every breath, and every second of competition. Within each movement made by these 19 swimmers lies a story of perseverance, ambition, and patriotism a story that will ripple far beyond the pool and into the heart of the nation.
